Recognition Tools

Tools for recognition of non-formal education/learning are any national/regional/local mechanisms and instruments for the recognition of learning outcomes, (e.g. knowledge, skills, and attitudes), that took place in a youth activity. If yes, how much are these instruments used by young people? No matter on which level used, the value of these instruments in our contexts are based on the effectiveness of how it works.

Key Recognition Tools on the European Level

Youthpass

Youthpass is a tool and a strategy of the European Union to promote the recognition of non-formal education/learning within youth work. The framework for the development and implementation of Youthpass is in the EU’s Youth in Action Programme. The aim of this strategic approach is to raise awareness, and support a professional and public debate concerning individual, social, formal, and political dimensions for the recognition of non-formal education/learning and youth work. Youthpass as a tool – a process and a certificate – makes the learning in the Youth in Action Programme projects conscious for the participant and the learning value visible to the outside world. It supports individual reflections, active citizenship of young people, social recognition of youth work, and the employability of young people and youth workers.

European Portfolio for Youth Leaders and Youth Workers

This is an online tool that helps individuals, teams and organisations doing youth work around Europe to understand their competence and to develop it more effectively. This tool can also be used by trainers, youth work managers and policy makers and generally all those interested in the topic of quality development and recognition of youth work.

The Council of Europe Youth Work Portfolio has been developed at the European level, but it is not primarily for people and organisations working at the European level or internationally. The Portfolio is addressed to youth workers and leaders working at any level from local to international.

The Council of Europe Youth Work Portfolio is an initiative of the Council of Europe in co-operation with partners such as the European Commission and the European Youth Forum.
